IT'S ME AGAIN,

I didn't think it was a good idea to sign up for my ex composing my memoir—I did it because our moment is but a simple memory that doesn't define who I am. So I did a thing, on the 9th, when I applied for a bookstore role for the thrill of it in 2020. I more like dabbled into routine life, being a contributing screenwriter of a Big Entertainment media house. A surprising offer from America's largest bookstore came in three days later, and I officially became a bookseller. And I created a bookstagram consisting of the keywords bookish and Claire, following Brenna Branson at first, my favorite book influencer, a Penguin Random House content partner. I scrolled through her pinned posts, and it was all comfort reads spotlighted by her shapely figure. She's just like me, incredibly fit but a bit bigger in certain areas—if we're talking about mid-sized boobs. I could see why Jack rambled to make out with her. Not that I'm skimming through her dealings or anything—which seemed entirely obvious.

Brenna was the first one who got the news of my promotion to sales executive in the cozy bookstore, so I thought she must have known what bookshop I was referring to. Brenna and I crossed paths at B&N, proceeding to the fiction section after sliding her a gift card. I'd gestured a knowing look when she seemed startled.

So Brenna and I chatted a bit:

"Hey Claire, it's been a while."

"Yes, I know we can't handle two days of separation."

"Look, if you're upset about my affair with Jack when he was with you, I'm sorry."

"He's still mine these days, and we've taken a break from each other. And Brenna, you're like a sister to me, so we're good."

"So we might start blabbing about fictional men?"

"Yes."

"I'd say they're quite a cringe at times but if he's shirtless on the cover, it's a no-no for me."

"Your taste used to intrigue me, so I'd probably do the same."

"You didn't mean the probably part, right?"

"Exactement."

"Good."

"Three totes of smutty editions. I see."

"One of the things girls want is books."

"Let me in on your progress—picky girls exist."

"OK."

"You know where to find me, bye."

Brenna and I took part in a three-second hug and steered to the B&C in Beverly Hills. There wasn’t any special event or groups in the hotel. We're on the balcony of my suite, sipping the best iced coffee I've come across. I made out to shop at Chloé.

"Brenna. You're coming?" I asked, showing her deep-V dresses on my iPad.

"Yes, sign me up."

"Look, we're on a budget, and we're working with a hundred thousand bucks."

"Make it two hundred."

"Fine, let's not break the bank."

"So we have a rich girl calling a splurge a budget. I might have to ask you where you get your money one of these days."

"Until then, let's get going."

"That's like what we're doing already."

"You spilled your fruit tea on my Tesla, so I'm using the Pagani.
